What’s Your Favorite Color by Amber L. Lassiter is a children’s book about a young girl and her classmates creating and an art piece that incorporates their favorite color. Once everyone is done with their artwork, classmates will try to guess each artist’s favorite color. The main character, Amber, forgot to bring her paints to school that day so she goes around asking her classmates to borrow certain colors. Each classmate she talks to believes they have figured out Amber’s favorite color. Amber needs to figure out how to keep her favorite color a secret and complete her art in time.

Lassiter has created a realistic and engaging children’s book. The characters are diverse with a plot that is easy for young readers to connect with. The best part about this book is the questions that the author has incorporated throughout the book. These questions help young readers engage with the story and help develop positive reading habits. There are even pages dedicated to the reader drawing in the book to help answer the questions! However, there are a lot of these questions and at times they can interfere with the flow of the text. I would have liked it better if instead of the full question written in between paragraphs the author put a symbol that would indicate an opportunity to answer a question at the reader’s convenience. The illustrations of this book are stunning! The cartoon-style the illustrator has used fits the mood of the story perfectly.

There are a few areas of the author’s writing style that I think could be improved. The descriptions of character actions can be confusing. For example, “Amber’s head moved slowly from side to side like a windshield wiper.” I don’t think this description matches the intended mood that Amber wants to portray. The plot is a lot of fun for kids, but some descriptions need to be adjusted to fit the intended meaning. I also found multiple spelling and grammar mistakes. Even though the author thanks an editor in the acknowledgements, it does not appear to be professionally edited.

I am rating What’s Your Favorite Color by Amber L. Lassiter 3 out of 4 stars. The illustrations, character diversity, and plot are worthy of a perfect score. However, the grammatical errors and sub-par descriptions bring this book down a level.

I recommend this book to anyone reading children’s books to their kids or students. The questions the author incorporates into the text will help the audience engage in the text brilliantly. Once the author makes those minor adjustments I will gladly provide this book with a perfect score.
