Review of The Close Encounters of Freddie Fly and Sidney Spider
My favorite part of this book was the way it integrated educational elements into the story. The middle of the book follows each animal individually, showing how life looks different for a spider and a fly. The author explores how the animals travel, find food, deal with different types of weather, and more. Even though he included a lot of information, I felt like it fit well in the book and didn’t interrupt the narrative.
I only have a couple of critiques of this book. First, the print is very small for a children’s book, and the author had plenty of space on the page to make it larger. Second, the story is a little confusing at the end. While avoiding spoilers, I feel like I can say that the spider makes an odd comment about Freddie not being part of his usual diet, even though spiders do generally eat flies. I was also confused as to what the spider does eat. He is shown eating a small insect, but I’m not sure what distinguishes Freddie from any other insect that Sydney would eat.
Overall, I would rate this book 3 out of 4 stars. I appreciated the educational elements and the lesson, but the ending confused me a little. Although the print was very small, I only found one mistake, so it generally looks very professional.
I would recommend this book to parents of kids ages four to eight. If your kid loves creepy-crawlies, this would be a fun, educational story for them! ****** The Close Encounters of Freddie Fly and Sidney Spider View: on Bookshelves
