Official Review: Spotty Dotty by Katherin Duncan
Spotty Dotty by Katherine Duncan is a story about a young blind owl, simply trying to make her way through life. This story is an emotional roller coaster with stunning illustrations and exquisite use of emotive language. I was drawn to tears while reading about Spotty Dotty and I feel this story deserves a place on every young reader’s bookshelf.
Katherine Duncan introduces many themes in this story such as bullying, difference, friendship, and overcoming obstacles to live a fulfilling life. These themes offer up tremendous conversation pieces and connections for young children to make as they grow and learn. Spotty Dotty’s struggles and subsequent decisions can inspire, entertain, as well as educate young readers everywhere. I am amazed at the characterization that Duncan weaves into such a short story. The characters are rich and show depth in their actions and words. You will easily fall in love with Spotty Dotty from the first page.
I love the plot. It is universal and opens up learning opportunities and conversations for young people to think about and connect with. The author has created a story that can be shared and loved universally. Katherine Duncan has evoked emotion, provided life lessons, and kept the story entertaining. These are all aspects of a brilliant children’s narrative. With a near-flawless plot development, the author has also provided incredible illustrations. These illustrations of words and pictures flowing together are equally as engaging as the storyline. There is nothing I would change about this book, I absolutely love it.
I am rating Spotty Dotty by Katherine Duncan a perfect 4 out of 4 stars. I love the way the author made me feel a range of emotions as well as provided exceptional life lessons for young readers. The book appears to be professionally edited as I found no glaring spelling or grammatical mistakes.
I highly recommend this book be read by adults and young readers alike. The life lessons are an excellent reminder for everyone and can provide great conversations for people to enjoy.
