Review of The Fortune-teller’s Daughter
The Fortune Teller’s Daughter by Jean DiFalco follows the story of a girl named Solé who has a younger sister named Dora. Solé is part of the Covari Tribe, and the chieftain is her grandfather. The menacing Fog creates quite a few problems for Solé, threatening her world, and when her mother, Sabine, starts displaying strange behavior, Solé must find a way to protect her family and the Covari Tribe, even when the cost is high.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I liked that the chapters were mostly short, and I found the book to progress quickly. Solé, being the main character, was my favorite. She has a bold, fearless personality, always seeming to choose action instead of surrender, but her softer side comes out when she interacts with her 7-year-old sister Dora. I related to Solé in a way; she has to grow up quickly, even though she is only sixteen. The character I disliked was Aida, who was a friend of Solé’s, but they seemed to have a falling out. Aida’s personality strikes me as terribly mean, and any kindness from her feels calculated.
The only negative aspect I can mention about the book is the editing quality. I found some grammatical errors within the book. There were also a couple of sentences that did not make sense, which created an occasional disruption to the reading experience. However, with that being said, there are no other negative issues about the book. Solé's fiery personality kept me on the edge of my seat while reading her action scenes, and I could not wait for the next chapter.
Overall, the author’s storytelling was wonderful and kept me glued to the pages, and I am excited to read where Solé’s next adventures lead. This is the first book in an upcoming series of books, and the book ended on a cliffhanger. I give this book a rating of 4 out of 5 stars. I deducted only 1 star due to the grammar issues mentioned previously. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys fantasy and young adult novels.
