This sounds like a very sweet story taking place in a time period that was so much simpler. Books like this often make me wish I'd lived back then. Thanks. Sounds wonderful.

I enjoyed the history part. It was interesting to read some history about California before the Gold Rush.

The cover design made me think this was a children's book! Your review proved otherwise and it sounds like it was a really good book. I'm an artist and I love historical romance, so I think I'll enjoy this story because its set in the 1800s and contains art. I'm curious about the symbol you mentioned. I wonder what it looked like and what it represented...

Historical romance has always been an interesting genre. California in the 1800's seen through the eyes of a growing child would surely make for an interesting read!

I love historical fiction as it comes to life when characters are involved in the process. Love your review. The book seems like an interesting read

The incorporation of the symbol was a unique way to introduce some mystery into the story. It was very well done.

Are any of the drawings actually in the book for the reader to see? I thought this was going to be a whimsical bed time story for children based on the cover art. I don't like when the cover art completely misleads. Although I like the cover, it doesn't seem to suit the book much at all. Nice review. Don't think this one is for me though.

The only illustration is a sketch of the symbol that has Maddie intrigued. It is actually used, in the book, as a way to separate sections in some of the chapters.
