Review of When the Leaves Fall
"When the Leaves Fall" by Mary M. Nyman is a novel that draws readers in by including multiple twists and turns in the plot. The story follows Corey, the main character who is trying to figure out how to navigate through life in high school. As an 8th-grade teacher, I cannot help but compare Corey’s experiences to my students and wonder what their experiences will be and how they will handle life’s ups and downs. As the story progresses the reader gets to see Corey grow as a person as he becomes less selfish and starts thinking about other people's thoughts and feelings.
I struggled with parts of this book, there were some long dream sequences that did not help with the storyline at all. Also, there were a few grammatical errors and confusing dialogue where I was unsure who was supposed to be speaking. I would not recommend this novel to anyone who is sensitive to children being harmed. However, it was an interesting read and kept me guessing on what was going to happen next.
I would recommend this book to high school age students and older. It can show them that they aren’t alone in the things they have to face and even if they make mistakes, they can change things around and make things right. The book does not contain any profanity. I liked that the main character had a life changing experience and looked at the things he could improve, not only in his life but the people around him also. It is a reminder that sometimes we need a wake-up call in order to become a better person and to do better for the people that we love.
In conclusion, I would rate this novel a 3 out of 5 stars. It is a very good realistic representation of what some teenagers have to experience in order to become well-rounded adults.
