This one is not for me at all. I read mostly non-fiction, so the story really has to catch my attention. This sounds a little bit too gritty for my tastes. The characters seem to be quite interesting but what I don't like is the sex components for these young people. I don't mind some graphic sex for romance novels but I don't like the rape and the sex with the friend's mother or sister especially since the characters are only 13 and 15. I think I'll pass. I appreciate that even though many characters were discussed, it is still easy to follow the story and keep focus on the two most important characters - Spike and Joey. What fascinates me most is the complicated nature of Spike... I believe aside from it graphic scenes, this book has potentials ...

Being a book about the struggles of a vulnerable teenager, this novel sounds interesting to me. Diversity in the book also seems to be a positive point. However, the remark about moments of violence was a little off-putting. Great review, though! Very well-written and thorough. Kudos to the reviewer!

I read the sample pages of the book and instantly got caught up in the story. Then I read your review. I agree that sex is something that teenagers think about and do, so this would catch their attention; however, if the language is as graphic as your say, it would eliminate using it in a classroom situation as too many parents would complain about it.

Based on the review this is not a book that I would enjoy reading. I don't like to read stories about gangs or violence. The abuse and graphic content also turn me away from reading the story. I will pass on reading this book.
