Review of Swimming in a Sea of Stars
Swimming in a Sea of Stars by Julie Wright is a masterpiece. It features a cast of high school students who each have their own troubles in their personal life that may or may not be known to the rest of the student body. Addison takes center stage as she is about to return to school after a suicide attempt. Most of the school seems to know what happened, and she is terrified at the attention her return will bring. Avery, who has the locker next to Addison, is dealing with her brother's recent arrest for drug-related crimes. Celia's mother and string of boyfriends are abusive, but Celia is afraid to come forward and tell anyone. These are just a few of the characters in this amazing book. How will all their stories play out? Check out a copy of Swimming in a Sea of Stars to find out.
From the opening of this book, it was clear this book does not shy away from heavy topics. Suicide, bullying, abuse, and other issues are tackled in this book. I thought that Wright handled these issues in a sensitive yet realistic way. As the book progressed, it was clear each character had some issue, and they were all connected more deeply than they realized. My favorite part of this book was seeing how each character found their network of friends and the support that came from them. Some of the throwaway sentences uttered by a character had such a big impact on the other characters, and I thought that was cool to see.
I also enjoyed how parts of the book were told from Addison's journal. It gave insight into her brain while providing an unreliable narrative. That was offset by the third-person narrative that dove into the other characters. It was a unique mix of narrative voices that I quite enjoyed.
There was nothing I truly disliked about this book. I am delighted to award it 5 out of 5 stars. I only spotted one minor error in the entire book; I believe that it was professionally edited. I recommend this book to anyone thirteen and older, though please be wary of potential sensitivities. This book addresses important topics and is well worth reading.
