Review of Her Soul
Shortly after Kaylee, her father, and her best friend, Lisa, moved to Redheart, her mother showed up at their new home like nothing happened after a five-year absence. Her leaving affected Kaylee and her dad more than she cared to admit, so she didn't understand her father's calmness and the warm reception he gave her, despite her actions. She expected him to be enraged, upset, anything but the peace he exuded. With time, she learns the reason for her mum's absence all the while and that their move to Redheart has nothing to do with expanding her father's security firm. Her whole life was a lie; her parents and best friend aren't who she thought they were. But the revelations were just a prelude to what awaits her in the new town.
Her Soul is a young adult novel by Patti Malcolm. Its character-driven plot, first-person narration, and the concept of mates infuse a fresh twist to the werewolf fantasy genre.
As a budding author, Patti shows lots of promise. I like how she built and sustained suspense from the beginning to the end of the story. The palpable air of doom kept me on my toes from start to finish. Major events unfold chronologically, so there's barely room for confusion. The story's smooth flow made my reading a breeze.
Patti takes her time to develop a cast of diverse and fascinating characters. Kaylee is an opinionated bibliophile. Lisa is fun and easygoing with a keen eye for stylish clothes. Ryder is striving to balance his role and responsibilities as a leader and his feelings. Together, their personalities and peculiarities complement each other. Kaylee's character, especially, will resonate with young readers going through life changes.
Even though the execution is good, I think some scenes were a little ludicrous. Sadly, I can't explain my point without spoilers. It's nothing too shabby, though. Also, I could have used more details on how being werewolves affects the characters' lives compared to normal humans. Some unique abilities and actions would have made for a richer story.
The above quibbles notwithstanding, I rate the book 4 out of 4 stars. It's skillfully edited and captivating, with lots of twists and turns. It's also well done for a first book. It was worthwhile.
I would recommend it to anyone with a penchant for werewolf or fantasy literature. Adults and young adults with an affinity for the genre will enjoy the book. It contains instances of profanity, violence, and torture, so it's not suitable for children.

I appreciate your comment. Thank you Limitless.El_limitless wrote: ↑19 Jun 2021, 01:01 Wow. There seem a lot going on in Kaylee's life. Discovering the people around you aren't who or what you initially believed them to be is a difficult thing to deal with. I'd to find out how she continues after then. Great review.
