Official Review: The Witches of Vegas by Mark Rosendorf
The Witches of Vegas by Mark Rosendorf is a young adult book that brings magic and the supernatural to the stages of Las Vegas. Zack has grown up learning performance magic and slight of hand tricks with his Uncle Herb, who was once the greatest magician in Las Vegas. However, the new act in town, the Witches of Vegas, has been stealing their audience, and Zack needs to find out why, if he and his uncle want to continue to make ends meet. A suspicious reporter makes the suggestion that they are real witches and teams up with them to form a plan to reveal their secrets.
Zack's task is to befriend Isis, the newest and youngest member of the crew, whose specialty is the astonishing levitation act. Isis has lived a sheltered life with her adopted family, who have have been protecting her from the world as they teach her a different kind of magic. Eager for companionship, both Isis and Zack begin to uncover a series of secrets as they get to know each other, changing their lives, and their magical performances, forever.
I absolutely adored this book and all of the twists and turns that came along with it. There are so many other interesting characters in the story that I didn't mention above, but even with a large cast, the plot is easy to follow and is well-paced. The story is action-packed but also manages to develop all of the main characters adequately. It's not often that I find a book that pulls off both of these in unison.
It's no secret that this is a fantasy story involving magic, both of the supernatural kind and of the illusion kind. With some historical pieces tossed in, it is also a very modern story set in Las Vegas, and anyone who has ever been to Vegas can easily imagine themselves among the lights along the strip. There are also hints of an innocent romance. I love it when genres overlap like this.
If there is anything about the book that I didn't like, it was that it ended with a few questions unanswered. Of course, these questions will be answered in a future sequel to the book, but I was so disappointed that the story was over already. I am already looking forward to reading more about Zack and Isis.
Overall, I am pleased to give this book a rating of 4 out of 4 stars. The writing is absolutely flawless and has obviously been professionally edited. With only mild profanity throughout the book, it is suitable for most young adult readers, and I would certainly recommend it to any teens who enjoy magic of any variety. To put it mildly, it's been a while since I have read a book this good, and I highly encourage other fans of young adult fantasy to check it out as well.
