The Crystalleries of Echoland by Dew Pellucid

Let's dive in a frozen lake and be transported into a world of see-through people, tormented souls to keep the order, and a false king. The Chrystalleries of Echoland by Dew Pellucid, is a young adult novel filled with new friendships, danger, conspiracy and betrayal. An illustration with words; it provides perfect images of this faux ice filled world crystal clear in the readers mind. Our story starts in Alaska as our young hero ponders the disappearance of himself and his twin sister many years ago.

Will Cleary was just two years old when he and his twin sister disappeared without a trace. Their disappearance was documented among hundreds of eerily similar cases, but Will's was different. He was the only one to ever come back. Only he came back alone, without his twin. The toddler was found unharmed with two wild animals as his protectors. Ten years later and a week before he turns 13, his animal friends, still by his side, save him once again. Will dives into the frozen lake where it all started; with hopes of finding his sister. He wakes up on a bank to his pets talking, only now they are people and he can see right through them! After he is convinced that they are truly his beloved pets, he gets some questions answered. They explain their world, Echoland; every living thing born in Will's world (a sound) has a reflection or alter self in Echoland (an echo). An echo is identical to his or her sound in all aspects but two. Echos are semi transparent and they lead a life that is all their own; Will's echo happens to be the prince! Will then finds out not only his his sister alive, but they know where she is! He also learns that he was sent back all those years ago in order to keep the prince from being murdered before he could assume the throne at the age of 13, because Echoland law decrees that if a sound dies in their world than their echo must also perish.

Before they move forward with the journey, Will's companions entrust him with a coin they called 'the royal shekel'. The also gave him a small stone filled with some liquid and tiny gem stones floating inside. The stone they called a 'crystallery'. This handy little piece of magic has the power to read memories, only not just a person's memories but inanimate objects as well. Will travels with his protectors to this sparkly, beautiful ice filled wonderland where he is quested with not just saving his sister; he must also save Echoland by helping the prince stay alive long enough to take his place as king. Will our young hero be successful or will the fate sealers seal his fate?

I enjoyed The Crystalleries Of Echoland by Dew Pellucid and i give it 3 out of 4 stars. It was well written and i didn't catch any errors in spelling, grammar or punctuation. The target audience is geared towards young adult, however I think the some of the vocabulary may be difficult for the younger reader. Also, there are some vividly gruesome battle scenes as well as suicide and murdered corpses; making me feel that middle school would be too soon for this particular read. There is no profanity or sexual content. The author did a wonderful job of using her words to the fullest to create an amazing and magical world, come vividly to life. I must also say that i enjoyed the originality immensely. I enjoy fantasy and always have , but the stories have all been told before. To come across her new twists on a already told concept is both unusual and refreshing.

I dropped my rating from four stars because the story was a little slow in getting started. The beginning of the story comes off as dry and a little generic. With it being so slow in starting off, if I was reading for pleasure, I would have stopped reading before it got going. I read because i want to get away from the stresses of life. I don't want to have to work to enjoy a book. I also think the unnecessary subplots and side stories took too much away from the main story line. I am happy i continued the story since it turned out to be so much better than the first few chapters predicted. I especially liked the completely unexpected plot twists as the story came to its close. More than once she took me by surprise; I think this is the end and things are wrapping up, then boom! It turned out to be a great story; I enjoyed the escape and adventure. Dew Pellucid brought her characters to life beautifully and they will be enjoyed by all who meet them. I recommend this book to fantasy lovers young and old.
