Thanks for an interesting review. I hope Johnny and mum didn't suffer much in that camp.

I enjoyed reading your review and how many you emphasized how well written this story was based on the lack of criticisms. When I read about Johnny's boxing lessons it made me think about my own grandpa who boxed on board his aircraft carrier during his stint in the Pacific during the second World War. I also liked that the book was told from a child's perspective and that even though the readers knew that liberation would be coming, it was never a certain thing at the time.

An intriguing book with a touching premise. I like that the story is told through the eyes of the young boy. Readers get to experience a different perspective of the impact of war on young children. Thanks for sharing.

Johnny at 12 during a war is something new. Whatever he might be feeling at a time like that is very intriguing. I am looking forward to digging into this novel to know how his mind will process everything around him. Imagine the confusion!

"How many will die before help arrives? Will he survive? What has become of his father?" Some one Johnny's age should not have to ask these questions; I'll bet this book will break your heart, but it provides some good life lessons, as well. Johnny's character is relatable, and I am interested in the content of the book. No one really writes about the internment camps, ours or the enemy's.Both sides had them, and they were all horrifying. Perhaps this book will be a great introduction to the evils of humanity, about which, unfortunately, we need to know. Thanks for the review.

This appears to be a touching story, but written for young adults. I like that the tone is light and focuses on a child's perspective. Thanks for a detailed review.

Well-written and highly-rated, today's BOTD is a YA historical fiction novel that's set during WWII and told from the POV of 12-year-old Johnny. The realistic dialogue and descriptive details bring the characters and storyline to life, as readers learn the impact war has on adolescents. Your review was outstanding! Thank you! :-)

What a unique take on a war so many books are written about. It is really refreshing to see how it impacted the younger people. Great review.

From a sampling, this seems like an interesting young adult fiction novel focused on a young boy who is placed in an internment camp in Manila by the Japanese during WWII. The boy learns many things from his fellow interned citizens. It might be worth a second look. Well done.

A story about the Second World War told from the perspective of a twelve-year-old boy in an internment camp. Johnny sounds like an endearing character, and I’m intrigued as to how he will perceive and describe the world around him. I’m definitely going to try this book!

This is a tale about wartime written from the viewpoint of a teenager. It really grips you from the beginning as you want to know more about him, his family, the people in the camp, and what happens to them all. Thanks for an excellent review.

The author gives voice to war victims we know about but seldom hear speak. Johnny's descriptions will enthrall younger readers and educate them about the camps. This sounds like a fascinating book. I look forward to reading about Johnny's experiences. Great review!
