Re: If you ever published a novel, who would you dedicate it

Post by Tokigirl2 »

My published books are dedicated to the people who make them possible. That includes family, friends, editors, inspirations -- there are always too many to list. I can see dedicating a book to a specific person, if that person has somehow been a specific inspiration for that book. But I'd still include everyone who made the book possible. I find it hard to single out anybody in particular. Claire Youmans

In my novels (all 3 professionally published) I thanked those early pioneers of the private eye genre, Dashiell Hammett and Raymond Chandler. I also spoke well of a couple current mystery authors whom I try to emulate, Bill Pronzini and Robert Crais. I thanked my publisher and so on. I added thanks to my parents who instilled in me the love of literature and the freedom to pursue my dreams. And in my most recent novel, the 3rd, I thanked a couple of pals who helped me with some of the research.

So I didn't "publish" my novels -- they are all 3 published for me professionally -- but nevertheless the dedication is the same.

I think I would thank this particular English lecturer of mine in University. He was the first one to actually make me question my answers and made me think. He also never judged a student based on their English abilities, like some teachers I know.

Whoops, I think I kinda went off on a rant a bit heh. :-D

No rant, just your thoughts on the matter.

I however disagree on one point --- "Ich liebe dich" sounds just fine, especially if sung per Beethoven. Not at all confusing or terrifying.

To Morgan, because you were one of the first ever to read my work.

To Aaron, because you believed in me.

To Nate, because I loved you more than enough.

Part of my own dedications for my published novels include a recognition of my lady love, too.

I would say to all the great inspiring writers that after reading their books have given me the strength and the knowledge to follow in their paths each and everyone of them. And to the good Lord for the hidden talent.

I also thanked those writers who've inspired me -- see my post above -- and next month when mystery writer Robert Crais comes thru Houston on his book tour, I'll give him a copy of my new private eye novel, part of the dedication of which credits him and his ever-petulant private eye Elvis Cole. Just my way of saying thanks, the least I can do.

If I ever finish any of the stories I have been working on I would dedicate to my husband for always believing in me and my kids. Not really a particular reason, many reasons all together.

If I got a book published, I would dedicate it to several people in this order, my mom (always supportive of everything I do), my best friend (he's read all the short stories I've written even though he thought they were girly and not his thing, he's helped me with grammar and stuff like that) and my family.

My new novel "Blood Storm" was just published (it's a private detective novel, 2nd in the series). This is the dedication from the book:

Many thanks to my friends and family who encouraged and supported me when I was struggling with indecision on my novels.

Greatest appreciation to Bill Pronzini and Robert Crais for providing me such illustrious targets and goals toward which I could endeavor to aim.

I would probably dedicate it to my parents, for all that they have given me.
