Do people want erotica?

As a reader, I do read erotica. The genres I read are very broad but most of my reading is on romance, erotica or not. As a writer, I do write explicit scenes and that's because the situation calls for it and I'm comfortable with writing such scenes. If you're not comfortable writing explicit scenes and you don't want to then don't. It doesn't matter whether it's popular or not. The joy of writing is writing what you want. Personally, for me, I let the characters lead me. If sex fits right in then I'll write it. If not, I don't.

The thing is, sex has to make sense in the story. If it's just sex thrown in for the heck of it, I'd say it's more porn. If it fuels the story and serves a purpose to the plot then it's erotic romance. That's what I think. I get turned off when the characters just keep having sex without it having any meaning to the plot but if there's sexual tension from the very beginning and it grows even more heated throughout the conflicts then finally culminates in an erotic sex scene then whatever the heat level is is fine with me.

I don't mind erotica or sex scenes within a novel if they aid to further the plot. A sex scene is very intimate and it sometimes can reveal the true content of a character which can be vital to the story. However, I cannot stand reading books with pointless sex scenes that have no purpose. That is more pornographic to me because it comes off more as a book about sex with a lame plot tossed in for legitimacy.

Of course people want erotica! Even sometimes with explicit scenes. Some of us should stop be hypocritical. Sex is part of life and we derive much pleasure and excitement from it. There should be erotica genre books in the shelves for people to buy, read, enjoy and learn more about it but an author should be cautious about it. Erotica can go with any other mature genre. It's only left for the reader to choose what he/she wants to read.

I'm working with an author at the moment, who became an escort so she could carry on supporting the three kids she is raising by herself. She describes the joys of sex, even if she was offering it only with a price tag, but she is equally graphic about the humiliation, harm, and fear she experienced. Without some erotic content, this book wouldn't be a portrayal of her real life

If it isn't real don't write it
If you're just putting porn into words don't write it
If its integral to the character or characters or revealing of their wider tastes and attitudes, let the authentic detail roll

I, personally, am not very into the genre. I like some heat in certain stories, but prefer the author to let my imagination run wild instead of being told every detail of what two characters are doing with each other. Seems like the genre is pretty popular in general though, so wouldn't be a bad idea to write a book on it if you're trying to reach out to public interest.

Personally, I think people read erotica for one reason and one reason only--the erotica. It is extremely popular and is among the top selling genre's on Amazon, so I think it's safe to say that it has its place! I agree though that because it has become so popular, it seems to be getting harder to write; scenes get weirder and authors are struggling to come up with new words to describe sex scenes, which is definitely challenging! I think if you have a talent for writing it in a way that can capture and keep people's interest, then do so. If you don't like writing it, or don't see the point of it, then it's probably not the genre for you ; )

I draw a line, nowhere. Why we should put a limit for erotica in fictions when that is also part and parcel. No need to go to extreme details. Yet it is ok to add some erotic scenes to fictions as relevant

If there is a solid plot behind the erotic scenes, and if there is a purpose for the erotic scenes, then I wouldn't mind reading it at all.

The odd graphic sex scene is great if it's written well, but it shouldn't be the whole point of the story. When I write erotica, I write it to get more of a feel for the story and the characters: ie a girl whose last boyfriend was rough and her new man makes love to her gently, or a girl who does anything a guy wants because she's desperate for love and thinks complete submission is the only way to get it. It's rare for me to use erotica in any other way.
