Commas in Compound Sentences--Thing of the Past?

Post by mrswoodlee »

I've read several works recently where the author consistently left out the comma that traditionally separates the two halves of a compound sentence (eg, "Susan went home, and I stayed here," only without the comma). Enough that it struck me as deliberate, rather than a matter of negligent editing.

Is this a thing now? Did I miss the memo that declared war on commas? First the Oxford, now this? Am I being old-fashioned by following traditional punctuation rules, or does this one still hold? I, for one, am a fan of any helpful comma, Oxford included, as it alleviates confusion, sometimes even where the author doesn't see room for any.

What do you all think?

There should be a comma if the second clause is an independent clause. There should not be a comma if the second clause is a dependent clause. In the above example, there should have been a comma.

Nowadays the languages are becoming more easy to use and the previous grammar and other rules are much less considered. I think, when you try to read what you write, you feel the places where you need punctuation marks and you can out appropriately. No need to adhere to strict rules

If you're writing for yourself, do what you please. I can guarantee that if you are writing an official review that the editors most certainly do "adhere to strict rules."
