Footprints in the Sand by Liz Alter is a journey of healing. Emily moved to Sunshine Shores, a quiet beach town. She is a pediatrician who cares deeply for the children she sees. Her own life was turned upside down by the death of her husband a few years prior. This town might just be able to bring her the peace and healing she needs; tiny footprints and gifts find their way to Emily, causing a bit of a mystery but also a sense of acceptance. Emily finds comfort in a cat, Luna, and the possibility of a new relationship with Dan, a wildlife rescuer. What is the cause of these tiny footprints? Will Emily find the peace she has been seeking?

I enjoyed the wholesome, gentle tone of this book. Alter took the time to dive into Emily's daily life, including her work at the clinic and exploration of her new town. These small details showed her dedication to her patients and the friendliness of the townspeople. It made Sunshine Shores feel like a vibrant and real place. I also think that by describing Emily's patient interactions, the themes of growth and healing were shown in a different manner. The book not only showcases Emily's healing journey, but also the healing of each child she takes the time to soothe by embracing their imaginations.

There was a lot of repetition in the descriptions. While the tiny footprints are important to the story, it seemed as though each time Emily noticed them, specifically in the first part of the book, the scene played out about the same. I feel as though there could have been a little more variance in these encounters.

I rate this book 4 out of 5 stars. I enjoyed the cozy, heart-warming feel of the book. However, I am taking off one star due to the repetition I previously mentioned. Otherwise, it was quite enjoyable; it was also perfectly edited. The book does contain Christian themes, so I believe that Christians would enjoy this book the most. However, those of other religious beliefs are certainly able to enjoy the story if they are open to these themes. The book is free from profanity and sexual content, making it perfect for both adult and teenage readers. If you are looking for a peaceful beachside read, then Footprints in the Sand is perfect!
