Penny was left at the altar. This is a horrifying situation, only made worse by the fact that the wedding was being livestreamed to her large audience. She is humiliated and feels the only place she can go is to her ex-boyfriend, Dean, who still lives in the same small town she left behind. Dean is a ruggedly handsome, though grumpy, surfer who was left heartbroken by Penny. Penny realizes that fake dating Dean is the perfect solution to save her image. However, will the pair be able to keep old feelings from resurfacing? Read Second Chance for the Grumpy Surfer by CL Bloom to find out!

My favorite part of the book was the mix of scenes taking place in the past and the present. Bloom did an excellent job of weaving in narrative from both Penny and Dean's perspectives, along with showcasing their backstory. The two were in a relationship in college, and snippets of that relationship were shown throughout the book. I think this did an excellent job of establishing their past and how they both got to where they were in life. I also enjoyed that Bloom included chapters from both of their perspectives.

I do wish that the book had been a bit longer. I would have liked to see the initial tension between Penny and Dean expanded upon. It felt as though they had moved past their uncomfortable phase of ex-lovers reunited quickly, and I think even an extra chapter in this phase would have helped better establish their characters and the stakes in the relationship.

This issue was not too significant and only worth taking off one star, so I rate this book 4 out of 5 stars. The writing was powerful, and it was well-edited. I thoroughly enjoyed learning the backstories and seeing how the past impacted Penny and Dean's lives. This book is a great option for fans of second-chance romance. It does contain strong language and sexual content, so it is only suitable for mature audiences. Given the short length, it could make for a perfect beach day read. For animal lovers, there are also the most adorable scenes with Dean's dog, which is just an added bonus!
