[Following is a volunteer review of "My Ladybird Story" by Magus Tor.]
[rbc=4]id52813-125[/rbc]I give My Ladybird Story by Magus Tor a 4 out of 4 stars. The book is engaging and informative and offers a look into the questions, challenges, and joys faced by a person who is transgender in today's American society. The author explores how life is for the protagonist before, during, and after realizing her true gender identity and transitioning from male to female.

I was not aware of the many ways that someone may be impacted by being assigned a gender that he or she does not identify with, so I appreciated learning more about what this struggle is like and how it impacts one's mental health and relationships. The book also is educational as it describes some of the details of the transitioning process. I think it is important for people to be educated about these issues in a diverse world, so also appreciated the book for this reason.

Another aspect of the book that I enjoyed was the author's focus on how the relationships between characters evolve over the course of the protagonist's transition from male to female, and the varied responses all of the characters' have to the protagonist's self-identity over time. The relationships between characters is always the most interesting part for me when reading a book, and I think the author of My Ladybird Story does a particularly good job expressing the compassion and trust that exists between some of the characters. This aspect of the book is probably what made me want to keep reading it and finish it.

I recommend this book to anyone who is interested in learning about or gaining a better understanding of transgender issues and is interested in mental health. Despite the heaviness of the issues explored in this book, it is easy to read and the author balances that heaviness with the characters' positive experiences so that the book does not become too emotionally cumbersome to read. Some may see this as a negative and as making the story unrealistic, but I think it is important to have books that focus on themes of hope, change, self-identity, and compassion.

After reading the book, I also became curious about the author himself and what prompted him to write this book. And I also wonder how someone who is transgender might perceive this book. These questions that have popped up after reading the book indicate to me that it is a good book to discuss with others. As someone who feels less informed about transgender issues, I think this book was a good introduction. I noticed a few small typos, but overall the book has a nice clear structure and writing style that make it a quick and engaging read.
