Review - Escape (Tip of the Spear Book 1) by Belle Ami
When Layla decides to visit Dubai with her boyfriend Zamir, she expects a normal leisure trip. Prior to the trip, she was worried that Zamir’s parents will not like her, but that becomes the least of her worries when they are both kidnapped from their hotel. As events unfold, she finds herself alone (while her boyfriend returns safely) and at the mercy of a ruthless guard. When Cyrus arrives and saves her from the guard, she thinks of him as her superhero. However, having faced life-altering events, she is unsure about Cyrus’s true intentions. Is he who he claims to be?
Due to her father’s work, Layla could be a perfect blackmail target. To prevent this, Cyrus has been given clear instructions – to escape the country along with Layla. If he fails to do so, he has to kill her. The circumstances are far from ideal, but Layla and Cyrus cannot ignore the attraction they feel towards each other. Given the circumstances, will they act on it? Will Layla and Cyrus be able to escape? Even if everything works in their favor, will their feelings for each other remain when they are back to their normal lives?
The book belongs to the romance genre and has some elements of a thriller. As a fan of romance books, I was happy with how the author dealt with Layla and Cyrus’s relationship. The sequence of events and their feelings seemed realistic and believable. I found myself thoroughly engrossed in the story and was rooting for the couple throughout the book.
According to me, Layla’s character was the best part about the book. Although I could not relate to the situation she was in, I could connect with her and understand all her decisions. She was strong, sensible and could stand by her decisions. I like strong female protagonists and Layla fit the bill perfectly. On the other hand, Cyrus was a likable character. Although his angry side was revealed in a few scenes, the anger was understandable. All the secondary characters in the book were relevant to the plot and were handled well by the author.
The story was told mostly from Layla and Cyrus’s perspectives, which, given the thriller element of the book, was perfect. The transition between the perspectives was smooth. The plot followed a good pace and I did not come across any obvious grammatical or editing errors. Overall, the book was easy to understand and follow.
Without giving away any spoilers, I can say that I loved the ending of the book. I liked the last few chapters so much that I did not want the book to end and was truly disappointed when it did. While I have no major issues with the book, I have to mention that the book has very detailed mature scenes. The descriptions were more than I was expecting or have ever read in the past.
I would rate the book 4 out of 4 stars. The book has a strong plot, realistic characters and is very well written. I could feel everything that the characters were feeling and that, I believe, is a sign of a great book. Due to the mature scenes, I would recommend the book only to adults who are looking for a quick romance story with elements of a thriller.
