Review of Broken Boys Beyond Friendships
Broken Boys Beyond Friendships is written by Dak Kopec. It is the story of a long-life friendship between two boys who meet in high school. When Blake moves with his family to Boston, he befriends Logan and they quickly become inseparable. The two boys plan a life together. They want to achieve their dreams of becoming actors but unfortunate events will make them take very different paths. The story is about love, friendship, jealousy, despair and hope.
Blake is the main character and he will tell his story to a young journalist. He is a kind and sensitive man. As a youngster, he is an aspiring actor who will stop at nothing to become famous. He is a dedicated and loyal friend to Logan. Logan also wants to live his life as an actor, he has dreams of a successful career in the film industry. The two boys are attractive and athletic. They spend a lot of time surfing in Los Angeles where they have moved to. The other characters are also important in the story. Eden is a young Australian girl who becomes close to Blake. She is a free spirit who becomes Blake’s girlfriend but does not always seem to be loyal to him. Dillon is a young man who will befriend Blake and will play an important part in the story. Julian is a journalist interested in Blake’s story. There are other characters in the story, some will have good influences on Blake. However, not all characters will want the best for Blake.
The story is beautifully written. The story is simple and flows. The author uses two different styles. The story is divided into chapters describing Blake’s current life as a fifty-year-old man, and chapters describing Blake as a young man starting his adult life. It is written in the first person when the reader learns about Blake’s story as a youngster. However, the chapters about Blake’s current life are written in the third person. The story is easy to follow with a few unexpected twists to add interest. There are sexual references and the story also includes drug abuse, so this book is for a mature audience. I think the story will appeal to readers who enjoy a romantic story. All readers who enjoy a story about a strong friendship will be moved by this book.
I liked the book. The characters were loveable and it was easy to feel empathy for them. The story was interesting. It was fascinating to learn about the film industry and how difficult it could sometimes be to become a successful actor. I felt sorry for some of the characters who faced enormous difficulties in their lives and ended up in the sordid world of drug addiction. It was also a beautiful reflection on how important friendship is in life. I enjoyed the unexpected ending.
There is nothing I disliked about the book. I rate it 5 out of 5 stars.
