Whenever someone asks me why I love reading, I say it is because some books surprise me when I least expect them. It happened with this book. It was such an amazing read. Broken Boys Beyond Friendships by Dak Topec is about Blake Roberts’ story and about the friendships he made in his youth after moving from California to Boston. You will learn about the decisions he made while trying to succeed, and how he faced the consequences of those decisions.

Jillian, a journalist interested in writing a book about Blake, asks him to tell her his life story. That is how we read about his current life while remembering his past. It is not common to have two stories intertwined and not get lost. You will be able to notice when he is talking about his past and when he is in the present. I thought that was very clever.

Also, the way Blake talked about his attitude when he was younger was very relatable, and I am sure not all of us will be able to share some details without feeling ashamed.

After a couple of chapters, the tone of the narrative will get darker, and even when the topics discussed might be controversial, the way the book was written is its greatest feature.

The ending answers all the questions I had from the beginning. I was intrigued by what happened towards the end, but everything came together. There was absolutely nothing I would change about this book. Broken Boys Beyond Friendships is definitely 5 out of 5 stars.

Even when I still have a lot of prejudice about some of the topics discussed; I am capable of appreciating how great the narrative was since it made me cry and laugh, which does not happen very often.

The editing was great, and I hardly found any typos. I would recommend this book to mature readers since it includes sensitive topics such as porn and drugs.
