The opening chapters are riveting and have a very authentic feel. On occasion, this author has shown glimpses in other books of an ability to write this well. In this one, I was amazed by the strength of Naomi and the grace of Ashley. I loved the uncles, Seth and Harry. I felt deeply for Naomi’s mother while at same time wanting to rant at her for the impact her behavior had on her family. Her continued defense of and interaction with the monster that was her husband is only one of several “obsessions” we are introduced to in this novel.
Once the scene shifts from the story’s origin to present day, it does begin to drag. For my taste, there was too much emphasis on Naomi’s house remodel and her photography. Nonetheless, the pace picks up as it moves toward the conclusion. The cameo appearance of the uncles and their interaction with Xander was heartwarming.
I would rate this one a three overall. It is disappointing as I think it could have reached a four with a bit more focus and editing.

It seems as if more than a few people on this forum feel that her various books can be too similar. I'm wondering if that is in reference to the plots of her different books being alike. Nevertheless, I thoroughly enjoyed this one and would give it 4 out of 4 stars. I almost literally couldn't put it down and stayed up way past my usual bedtime reading it. It was refreshing.
The only criticism I have is that the ending seemed a bit abrupt. I could feel the story start to conclude and caught myself thinking that I should really have more pages left to get through. The bulk of the book was exciting and I really enjoyed how the murder mystery was multidimensional. Furthermore, there were many quips and witty vocabulary that I found impressive. All in all, a very good book that I will be highly recommending to my friends!
