[Following is an official OnlineBookClub.org review of "Barefoot Across the Ocean: Niktoshka" by Victoria Korchikova-Malovichko.]
Unrequited love and self-discovery are some of the themes explored in the novel Barefoot Across the Ocean: Niktoshka by Victoria Korchikova-Malovichko. Iya, a deeply feeling and hopeless romantic woman, suffers over her unrequited love for an old fling, Victor. As she navigates through life with a soul so loving and generous, she learns that not every person is what they seem. How will Iya overcome her strong feelings for a person from her past?
This book intends to be a heartwarming tale of a woman overcoming an unrequited love. What I like the most about this book is the feeling of reading a coming-of-age story, despite the female protagonist being a grown woman. I like the message that it's sending: we never stop learning about ourselves, even through adulthood. It has poignant narratives that many people might relate to their own experiences.
Throughout the story, we follow a woman discovering herself and her emotional baggage towards a man whom the reader gets to perceive only through her eyes. I feel like this aspect is what limits the book, as Victor's character is made mostly through Iya's descriptions. The main character's musings seem incoherent, especially in the beginning. The timeline moves in such a convoluted manner that I sometimes struggle to follow some plot lines. The writing feels juvenile. Although the book is professionally edited, I find the format or style of the writing somewhat confusing.
Overall, I give Barefoot Across the Ocean: Niktoshka a rating of 3 out of 5 stars. Points were deducted owing to the issues mentioned above. Regardless, I recommend this book to those looking for a story featuring a protagonist learning to overcome her emotional troubles. The book is quite sentimental and poignant, so readers who are into this kind of narrative should give it a try.
