Official Review: Greater Love by Devyn Bakewell
Greater Love: Let Love In, and Watch How It Changes You by Devyn Bakewell introduces the reader to a young lady named Ryan McKnight who hails from Los Angeles. She had recently graduated from high school and headed to a college in New York, hoping to carve a new life for herself and leave her hometown and all its experiences behind.
Her father did not support her move to New York. As a result, she had to fend for herself and was forced to look for part-time employment while studying full time. She was fortunate to secure a waitressing job shortly after arriving in New York, and because of her outstanding grades, she also secured another job as Devyn’s tutor. Ryan and Devyn got to know each other and grew to like one another. The relationship had a shaky start, but that changed, and it blossomed until Ryan’s dark past crawled back and turned their lives upside down.
The protagonist is portrayed as a young, strong-willed, and determined girl whose voice was silenced as she was growing up. Moving to New York allowed her to reinvent herself and find her voice. Reading about her coming out of her cocoon was heart-warming and gripping at the same time. I also enjoyed reading about a strong female protagonist.
I enjoyed reading the book as the author’s writing style was easy to understand and made it easy to follow the storyline. The characters were well-developed and believable. Besides Ryan and Devyn’s love life, the storyline covered other themes like sexual violence, trauma, and abuse.
Although I did not grow up in LA, I could relate to Devyn and Ryan’s background and upbringing. The elements of drugs, prostitution, and violence are rampant and wreak havoc in most communities. The author’s depiction of life in neighborhoods that are affected by substance abuse and gang violence is commendable and mirrors true-life events.
There was nothing I disliked about the book. It was captivating, and the storyline was exciting and unpredictable. I only came across one error in the entire book, confirming that the book was professionally edited. For these reasons, I am awarding the book a rating of 4 out of 4 stars.
The book is suitable for a mature audience because it contains elements of violence and explicit sex scenes. Readers who enjoy fictional love novels with a sprinkle of sultry scenes will enjoy this book.
