Perfect is a tale of how perfect, normal life can change suddenly. A tale of survival and betrayal. A tale of family struggles. A test of the limits of family ties.

Seryna was a straight student who had never strayed from the path. She had a bosom friend, Alex who had been a friend since Kindergarten. They were both getting into college in about a month and Alex invited Seryna to a party to celebrate their last semester of high school. Things changed drastically from the day she attended that party. Seryna met Kieran at the party and from the moment she set her eyes on him, she knew she had found the love of her life. Kieran was a handsome, well-built man drafted to investigate the GAP substance which had begun to claim many casualties. Cases of teenagers acting crazy, doing drastic abnormal behaviors were on the increase. On one occasion, a boy started acting crazy and jumped off a cliff thinking there was a lake below. Things got too close for comfort when Seryna’s best friend Alex gets involved in a ghastly accident and ended up in the emergency room.

In an attempt to provide for his family and put an end to incessant lack in his household, Seryna’s father got himself involved in an illicit business. He teamed up with a group producing a type of jungle juice called GAP (essentially a mix of amphetamines and alcohol). His son was also involved and they both managed to hide the venture from other members of the family. His teenage daughter was just a month away from resuming in College for her first year. She got entangled in a relationship with a mysterious, sexy man whom she met at a party.

The storytelling skills of the author got me intrigued and engrossed. I literally kept turning pages. Would Seryna choose the family her world has revolved around? Or would she choose the mysterious and sexy Kieran whom she has known for barely a month? What would an 18-year-old girl be doing with an older man? None of the boys in her school had managed to catch her fancy and she had been she had always been hardworking and uptight. Was the perfect love affair with Kieran only a dream? Could it last or was he using her?

The book is also awash with scenes of suspense, action, and thrill as detectives are in pursuit of suspects in an attempt to get to the root of mysterious cases. I was in suspense, for instance when Seryna said “Looking in, I see the nurse pulling out her ventilator from her throat. I freeze. My worst nightmare has happened. Why are they doing that? My brain immediately jumps to the worst-case scenario. She’s dead. Dead people don’t need air.” It goes to show how fickle life is. How life is a roller coaster ride. Full of ups and downs. It depicts how one moment of distraction can cause you to digress and go off on a tangent.

There was a lot of very descriptive language which allow the reader to fully engage in each scene. There is some profanity in the book. The first appearance of profanity is on page 177. Some persons, however, may not like the erotic styling used during some scenes as the two love birds explore fantasies and engage in luscious sexual encounters. Hence, I would recommend this book for mature audiences and not younger readers.

I like how the author paints a picture that parents need to pay attention to their children. By paying a little more attention, they would spot changes in their behavior patterns, especially during the teenage years. There are fantasies that they want to experience and explore which need to be at the right time. The failure of which leads to unwanted consequences. Their future dreams and aspirations could be shattered. Years of hard work could go in the drain if proper counseling is not available. Seryna’s mother gave her a listening ear and counseling at difficult instances in her life while her father was distant.

I enjoyed reading the book, although, in my opinion, the conclusion was hasty and so, not well structured as other parts of the book. I rate it 4 out of 4 stars because of the captivating narrative voice and the writing style of the author.
