My favourite is The Partner. It is an old one but I keep remembering it. I have never read Painted House. What disappointed you in it?
Oooh. haven't read that one yet. I guess the ending was a bit disappointing. You know how everything makes sense in the end in his books? I think that was missing in the Painted House.
I remember "Painted House" really good and then rough ending. I didn't really like "Gray Mountain" either. A big advertisement about why coal mining was bad and many opportunities for great stories and they all fizzled out.
I haven't read Gray Mountain. I'm always interested in mining stories but seeing great build-up fizzling out is making my heart ache and frustrated sigh

Barbara Hambly. She writes strong, intelligent women well and really nails the dark fantasy stuff. My favorite series by her, the James Asher novels, have a Sherlock Holmes setting and feel, but with vampires, a spy/professor/philologist protagonist and his pathologist wife in Edwardian England. It's creepy and romantic and smart and just fantastic. Her Darwath trilogy is great too- a wizard, an archaeology grad student, a mechanic who plays guitar/wizard's apprentice- all fighting creatures that either eat your flesh, your blood, or your soul... it's so much scary fun. She just always really nails it.
Garth Nix too- his Abhorson trilogy is what got me hooked, but I've never read anything from him that didn't capture me utterly.

Gabriel Garcia Marquez always delivers, in my opinion. His novels are in Spanish but I know most of them are translated. You should give him a try.

Definitely J.K. Rowling, I’ve loved every word of hers I’ve read. The Harry Potter books of course, but also the series of murder mysteries she wrote as Robert Galbraith. Amazing! I still need to read The Casual Vacancy, hopefully soon!

I would have to go with God as the obvious choice. But if I had to pick a man or woman I would say that both John Bunyan and C. S. Lewis have yet to let me down. :D

I don't think I've ever met an author who hasn't let me down. There's always something I want to go differently, even something as small as using a colon instead of a comma. It might seem petty but I've been trained to notice such things and it's hard not to.
