I would have to agree with Anne Rice as well. Although Bram Stoker's Dracula is the real classic, Anne Rice gives more of a variety due to the number of books and gives glimpses into many different aspects of vampire life and different kinds of vampires while still keeping a gothic and tragic feeling to her books.

JR Wards vampires are written with a romance approach, but she has set to gold standard for vampires for me. Her writing is top notch and the detailed world she has created for her characters can almost make you forget they are fictional.

Anne Rice will also be number 1 in the vampire culture. However, P.C. Cast is pretty good on a YA level.

Anne Rice is definitely one of the best, but I have to go with Bram Stoker's Dracula.

Tarisa Marie has a new one coming out called Bryxx or something like that. It’s supposed to be good. Other than that, I don’t even know. I haven’t read any in so long.

Early Anne Rice is amazing. Her last two after she "found religion and lost it again" are sketchy. If you want sex that happens to be with vampires, Laurel K Hamilton after about book 8. The early stuff was good, then I gave up when it became chapters of supernatural porn with a bit of plot thrown in here or there. Kim Harrison is amazing character driven writing with a vampire, witch, and pixy for main characters. I completely love her Hollows series. If you want more small town Southern vampires with political slant, Charlaine Harris has a Sookie Stackhouse series with plenty of material.

Bram Stoker may have been the master storyteller but Anne Rice made me want to be a 15 year old nerdy vampire lol She writes vampires like no other.
There is a younger writer that deserves mention, H.P. Mallory who does a great vampire series on a sexy biter named Sinjin. She is definitely worth a read.

Bram Stoker. Also, I would stay away from PC Cast's and Kristi Cast's House of Night series

Bram Stoker. Everyone else pales in comparison.
