I definitely recommend checking out Cassandra Clare for anyone who hasn't previously done so. I'm absolutely in love with her books and thinks she writes such fantastic and vivid stories.

J.K. Rowling, Cornelia Funke, and Marissa Meyer. They each have a unique style that makes their books so captivating to read.

Patricia Briggs, C.C. Hunter, Rick Riordan are some of the authors of fantasy off the top of my head.

I highly recommend Susan Cooper! She has a good balance between the fantasy/adventure aspects and the emotional character development. Her series, The Dark Is Rising, is excellent - exciting and original, while still having depth.

I recently discovered an indie author who writes fantastic fantasy - Ashley McLeo. Just read her Starseed Trilogy and loved. There is romance but it’s not the focus. And the fact that every book passes the Bechdel Test? Bonus!

I second this! I believe he has a sequel to the Sword of Truth series out now.

I also just finished Michael Sullivan's Riyria Chronicles. It was pretty great!

Two additions to your list: George R.R. Martin of the A Song of Ice and Fire series and Christopher Paolini of the Inheritance Cycle (Eragon). Those are two very captivating fantasy series I enjoyed.

The Kingkiller Chronicles by Patrick Rothfuss, Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo and even A Song of Ice and Fire by George RR Martin, are all wonderful Fantasy books that don't have much focus on romance.

So, if you're a fan of this genre, what authors have you found who are still living and producing books who are worth reading?

My list:
C.M. Gray
Jaq D. Hawkins
Lita Burke
Amanda Lloyd Jennings
Niel Gaiman
V.E. Schwab

I'll add as I remember or discover more.
Tad Williams
Andrzej Sapkowski
Kate Elliott
Andrew Shvarts

Christopher Paolini is one of my favourites when it comes to fantasy. His Eragon series is so well crafted that I usually have to stop and take a breath multiple times while reading it. Everything from character arcs to world-building is done magnificently. I think everyone should read it though most won't make it to the end.

NK Jemisin
Naomi Novik (Uprooted and Spinning Silver)
Katherine Addison
Robin Hobb
LE Modesitt Jr

I really like Barbara Hambly's books too! But I forgot to mention her. Steven Brust and Naomi Novik are also good authors.
