There are many actually. Vikram Seth's "A Suitable Boy" is my all time favorite. Amitava Ghosh (The Ibish Trilogy and others) is also good. Vikas Swaroop, Arabinda Adiga, Jhumpa Lahari, Vikram Chandra etc. are a serious read. But on the lighter side it is definitely Chetan Bhagat, Amish Tripathy, Shatrujeet Nath are notable.
In fact there are a flood of fiction writers cropped up recent years and getting popular response among the young crowd. Dhurati Das, Ashwini Sanghi, Ravindre Singh, ravi subramanian are few of them.

Can't remember any except Arundhati Roy. I like her as an author even though her books are a bit depressing.

Ashwin Sanghi is my fav because of the genre he writes in. But Jhumpa Lahiri's work also interests me a lot. Downright hate Chetan Bhagat by the way!

I liked the works of Amish Tripathi, although I am not really a fan of his new series. I simply cannot stand the works of Chetan Bhagat though.

I have read several of Salman Rushdie's books if he counts as Indian not British. I would recommend him.

I really enjoyed Aravind Adiga's White Tiger but you'd have to be mad to look beyond Rushdie- one of the very best anywhere in the world ;)

I was just scrolling through to add Rohinton Mistry! I loved, loved, loved A Fine Balance. My comment was going to be - I've only read one of his books so not sure if it fits "favorite" but I did love it and will seek out more of his books.

Love to read Ashwin Sanghi and Amish Tripathi. It might be because I love the genre they write in. I even tried reading Amitav Ghosh and Jhumpa Lahiri as they are renowned authors, but failed miserably because I found their books highly depressing. And when it comes to Chetan Bhagat, just like many other Indian readers, I can't stand sight of his work. Obviously, I find it highly nonsensical.

I'm not sure how to answer this. one of my fav authors is Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni. Her palace of illusions is a masterpiece and I absolutely loved that book. and then Chetan Bhagat is also my favorite author because I started my first book with him and it helped me grow a little more.
Smile, for better days are yet to come :D
