Jacqueline Wilson when I was first in school. She was aware not every kid had the perfect home life so she wasn't afraid to write about divorce, crazy mums, abusive dads, bullies, kids that didn't fit in, runaways etc. Lovely British writer.

My heart loves science, but my brain doesn't always comprehend. I like how Mr. Benford always wrote it in a way for even us scientifically challenged could understand. lol
He even replied to an email many many years ago.

I still remember we the kids in India grew up hearing the tales "PanchaTantra","Akabar and Birbal","ramayana and mahabharata"..
and my favorite author was Sudeep nagarkar and Kautilya
