I enjoyed George Orwell. Because I fancied myself as a bit of Jack the lad at school, I had to hide the fact from my friends who were into all sorts of coming of age antics. In English Lit classes, I was spellbound by so many books we had to read. However, Animal Farm and 1984 blew my mind in wonderful ways. I later went on to read everything George Orwell did with the exception of The Clergyman's Daughter. :D

My favorite author in high school was Nathaniel Hawthorne. We read the Scarlet Letter junior year, and it just shocked me. I didn't know anyone had the balls to come out and say what they thought to "Christians". Growing up in the bible belt, you learned what to say, when to say it, and how to say it. Hawthrone just flat out said f ya'll and your religion; here are the holes. He has been my role model for my life. He taught me whatever I believe in, I need to know the entire truth of it and not bend it to my will.

I discovered The Chosen by Chaim Potok. I read and re-read that book and several others in the series. Then I found out Potok lived local to me and thought it was the coolest thing ever! I learned a lot about the culture of the Hasidim while being beguiled by the characters.

I read so many of Juliet Marillier's novels as a teen. I liked how strong her female protagonists were.

John irving was probably my favorite because that's when I read A Prayer for Owen Meany and had to start reading all his works. The World According to Garp and A Widow for One Year are two favorites, too.

Judy Blume for teenage reads
Jacqueline Wilson when I was first in school. She was aware not every kid had the perfect home life so she wasn't afraid to write about divorce, crazy mums, abusive dads, bullies, kids that didn't fit in, runaways etc. Lovely British writer.

lol Not sure I can remember that far back. But I know Gregory Benford has always been one of my favorites.
My heart loves science, but my brain doesn't always comprehend. I like how Mr. Benford always wrote it in a way for even us scientifically challenged could understand. lol
He even replied to an email many many years ago.

In high school, I didn't have a favorite author. I was just in love with books so much that I read any and everything and loved them all. I do recall liking Richard Wrights books, even though I read them for school purposes.
