Although I haven't read any Hemingway in a long time, I remember feeling mixed about whether I liked the books or not. I really like the idea of his Key West, Florida home being overrun by polydactal cats!

I've always been a big fan of Ernest Hemingway and I particularly loved The Old Man and the Sea for its concise and impactful writing style.

'For Whom the Bell Tolls' is my favourite Hemingway book, but I quite like most of his stuff. I'm re-reading 'A Farewell to Arms' at the moment, mainly because I recently visited the part of Italy Hemingway was staying in when he wrote it.

I absolutely loved Hemingway's novels when I was younger. I have read most - if not all - of them. I do see how some of the things he wrote could be considered outdated and even sexist, though. I admit that the bullfighting glorification now seems a little silly to me. Anyway, I find his books entertaining and masterfully written.

Ernest Hemingway is undoubtedly an iconic figure in the world of literature. His contributions to the literary landscape, particularly through novels like "The Old Man and the Sea" and "The Sun Also Rises," have left a lasting impact. His distinctive writing style, characterized by economy of words and understatement, has shaped the course of 20th-century fiction writing and has been widely studied and admired.

The quote you've shared, "Happiness in intelligent people is the rarest thing I know," reflects Hemingway's introspective and often contemplative approach to understanding human nature. This quote, like much of his writing, highlights his keen observation of the complexities of life and the human psyche.

Hemingway's works and his influence on literature continue to resonate with readers and writers alike, making him a pivotal figure whose legacy remains vibrant in the world of literary exploration.

The Author of "classics" such as The Sun also Rises, and Old Man and the Sea! not only is he one of the greatest writers of the 20th century, but he was a pioneer. His, cut to the chase straight foward style was and still is uncomprimisingly unique. He paved the road for such writers as Jack Kerouac and Charles Bukowski (my two favorite authors)...Not only do I enjoy reading Earnest Hemingway's works, but I declare that that man was a genius!!!
I can understand why some people would find his writing to be pretentious but he was hugely important for the literary landscape of his time and set up many future authors and their styles too! I simply love A Moveable Feast and the other 1920s authors that were broke and trying to make a living with their art.

I am a big fan of Hemingway and I think people who find him over-rated should read some of his interviews. He was the first person to proclaim that more meaning was given to his symbolism and narratives than he ever intended. In a letter to art specialist Bernard Berenson in 1952, Hemingway wrote:

"There isn’t any symbolism. The sea is the sea. The old man is an old man. The boy is a boy and the fish is a fish. The shark are all sharks no better and no worse."
