I think Hamlet would be my favorite Shakespearean play for sheer depth in poetry and characterization.

I grew up in a city close to Verona, so Romeo and Juliet is a symbol for us, and I also really like its beautiful story.

That's a really hard one. Othello's good. Macbeth, The Tempest, As You Like It. And you can never go wrong with Midsummer.

Much Ado About Nothing and Othello! My favorite plays are usually determined by how much I like the characters. I love Beatrice in Much Ado. I think Iago is Shakespeare's most compelling antagonist.

I liked A Midsummer Night's Dream the best. I think the imagery was beautiful, and I felt that it came to life somewhat more than other of his more popular works. I also enjoyed the characters in this story.

Fran wrote: 07 Oct 2013, 08:32 I'd probably say Hamlet although I very much like King Lear, Coriolanus, Othello and The Merchant ... it's difficult to choose just one.
It is easier to say which one I like least - that would be Midsummer Night's Dream
I agree those are all excellent. But I personally love Midsummer! What about Midsummer do you not like?

Hamlet is unbelievably good. I also think Much Ado About Nothing is a groundbreaking comedy, I love that play.

Othello is my favourite. I know it's because I studied it for A-level and I had a brilliant English teacher, Ms Mortiboys, who opened my eyes to the multiple layers of interpretation of Shakespeare's use of language. And also the conflicting motivations and emotions of the characters - especially Iago. It's just genius.

I prefer his comedies. I find them much easier and more enjoyable to read. A Midsummer Night's Dream is still my favorite.

I admit that I haven't watched/read many of Shakespeare's plays but Hamlet was always a favourite of mine, I love the storyline and the characters, it's just brilliant.

I know I'm going to get an eye-roll, but Romeo and Juliet is my favorite. We read it during high school my freshman year and I couldn't get into it. Senior year, I read it for fun and I was enamored. Most importantly, I saw it for what it was: a tragedy. Too many mistakenly assume it's a romance, but knowing it won't end well puts the romance into perspective. The young lovers are so caught up and blinded with their love, it led to their demise.

Of the ones I have seen Macbeth and Hamlet are by far by favourites.

I have a bee in my bonnet about Shakespeare being read. They were never meant to be read, they need to be seen on stage to truly appreciate them.

Shakespeare's Macbeth and A Midsummer Night's Dream are my favourites. I've always enjoyed Shakespeare and was glad it was part of my school curriculum. Most of the other students found it boring but even they enjoyed it at times once the complicated language was deciphered.
