Who is your favorite Steinbeck character?

Post by DanBR »

Steinbeck is so well known that few of us have not read at least some of his books. Heck, some of us had to whether we liked it or not (yeah, I mean Mice and Man). Who is your favorite Steinbeck character?

Mine is Mack from Cannery Row. Mack is smart but uneducated, a natural leader who cares for his flock of bums and makes sure they get their fair share of food, shelter, and especially liquor, and that they do not stray (i.e., don't join the "normals" and do something stupid like hold down a job). He is funny without meaning to be so, a liar and a cheat but also good hearted.

I love Mack, but my favorite is Sweets Ramirez, a minor character from from Tortilla Flat, who keeps up the pretense that she has electricity (a status symbol in that town), and when a suitor buys her an electric vacuum cleaner, she just pushes it over the floor while humming to herself.

Lenny is definitely one of my favorites. His innocence was so sweet and pure, it endears him to the reader despite his actions.

Adam Trask from East of Eden. He is just such a complex character who struggles through many changes throughout his lifetime, but also seems to hold on to hope.

It has to be Lenny! I teach Of Mice and Men and I find that the students all love him which makes the ending all the more poignant.
