I heard a great testimonial on Limbaugh's Nat'l radio show...A 40 yr.old highly educated female M.D. admitted to reading and learning so much about American History from this " children's " book, simply because she hadn't payed attention in school...
I can relate, Same here!...I had the most BORING teachers, all they were interested in was " memorization " by rote...dates, places, etc, that had no significance to me..............as a result, " History " was always a very low grade for me!
Carpe Diem!

I starting reading these in elementary school and have read them so many times over the years, I have to keep replacing my copies.
Another good author is Sharon Creech. Many of her books are written from a young girls pov, but the lesson and the morals are very gender neutral.

The Divide series
The Series of Unfortuante Events was phenomenal
The Hardy Boys
Nancy Drew
Goosebumps
The Inkheart series
Wishbone books
A lot of these are young adult...but read them to your children! My mother read to me everynight and I have to say my love for books hasn't dwindled yet.

Roald Dahl

John Flanagan
Cressida Cowell
All authors I, as an adult female, still read and love to this day. A love shared by my younger brother, which is nice.
