I'll toss in another vote for Hugh Howey for fiction. For non-fiction, I can't get enough of Craig Childs (since I can't nominate the late, great Edward Abbey).

Sharon Draper is originally from Ohio, not sure where she lives now. She has written some great historical fiction on slavery. Her grandfather was born a slave and she has some amazing insight from him. My favorite book of hers is "Copper Sun."

Margaret Atwood is amazing and living.
Her book The Handmaids Tale was made into an amazing television show and she has so so many top sellers in addition.

I think you'd have a great conversation with Kate Morton!
