Longer Reading Times for Lengthier Books

Post by MsTri »

I've passed over quite a few books I'd like to have read and reviewed, simply because they were too long; I know however interested in a book I may be, I won't get through, say, 700 pages in the 30 allotted days. Maybe we could change timeframes a little bit? Maybe 3 weeks for books 500 pages and below and 6 weeks for books over 500 pages. I rarely see any 1000-page books listed, but any that length would offer a 2-month reading time.

I have to wonder if authors would go for longer reading times.
Life without a good book is something MrsCatInTheHat cannot imagine.

I agree with CatInTheHat. I think authors wouldn't want a longer turnaround. I think you can ask for an extension if you are unable to read the book within a month.

Keep in mind as well that the page numbers listed are not always accurate. I'm not sure if the author fills in that field on OBC or not, but sometimes it'll say 10,000 pages when it's not. Sometimes it'll say 100 pages when it's 400. I always take that with a grain of salt and also see what the Amazon page count is.

I agree! More often than not, the page count is far off from the actual count.

Thanks for that suggestion, @bookowlie. Is there no penalty for asking for more time? I'm usually done over a week ahead of time, so I haven't had to use that, but then I've purposefully only read books that are less than 400 pages.

I've never gotten to the point where I have had to ask for more time. I don't think you are given a penalty as long as you submit a request for more time ahead of the 1-month deadline and state the reason. You are given a penalty if the deadline passes and you haven't already been granted an extension. Also, I'm not sure if this is something you shouldn't do too frequently.
