Squares to the left of posts?

Post by Skillian » 17 Nov 2014, 00:24

hey! This may be a silly question, but I searched around and I haven't found the answer yet. I was wondering what the various little squares next to the postings mean (on the left). I notice a lot of grey or green squares, sometimes there is a '*', and then a little lock as well. Sometimes its just two at the bottom and sometimes they are diagonal. Is it random? haha. I assume the lock means only certain people can post there, but I was also just curious about the rest. haha. :)

-- 17 Nov 2014, 00:27 --

OK. I think I am actually going to take a guess based on observation. Green squares means it is posted by an older member, and grey means a new member? And the stars are ones I've already posted on? Maybe? But I still can't figure out why sometimes they are side by side or one on top or diagonal. haha.

As best I can figure, this is what I know about the squares. Green means someone other than you has posted last. Gray means you have viewed the post recently or posted last. The lock means that a moderator has locked the thread from anybody posting on it because of various reasons. (Usually because it is a duplicated topic) And the star does indeed tell you that you have previously posted on that thread. I hope this helps.

haha thanks! And now that totally makes sense. Now all that is left is figuring out the reasons for some being left to right.. on top of one another... or diagonal.

The squares on top of each other mean that the post is stuck to the top of the forum. I don't know what the squares side by side mean (haven't seen one of those posts in a long time).

Okay, I went looking and found some squares side by side. Maybe that means it is an announcement post (that is the only place I see them).

Skillian, thanks for asking this question! I have wondered what the little squares mean as well, but was too embarrassed to ask! I'm not really technologically inclined (and I'm sure it's been obvious in some of my posts), so I've just been guessing about the boxes without really knowing for sure. :D

If you hover your mouse over the squares, a little popup called a 'title' should be displayed (like often happens with links as well).

However, this list should act as a legend:

Just found this helpful post, but it doesn't include the question I have now. I've noticed that some of those areas left of posts also have a little picture--maybe a cloud or heart, or a question mark. I only noticed it today ;-) and I'm wondering why this has been added. Thanks!

Do you mean like this thread here that has a thought bubble?

Yes! Is this a new thing, or have I just not noticed it until now? Thanks, Gravy!
