I have the cheaper one with the ads. They aren't popups, so you only see the ad when you go to turn it back on from sleep mode, and sometimes they're actually good ads..I've found good books aND a few good amazon deals!

I went with the cheaper version with ads. The ads only appear on the lock screen for me, and they don't "pop-up" while using the reader. Honestly, I think it's a bit of a rip-off to pay an extra $30-$50 just to get rid of that.

I bought the Kindle Fire with ads. It just wasn't worth it to me to pay that much money to get rid of the ads and have a little bit of extra storage. I can see how the ads can be annoying to some people but all I do is make sure that the filter is up so that I don't see anything inappropriate and then I ignore the rest. Also, a couple of times the ads have helped me find something that I wanted. They base the ads on your previous purchases so that the stuff that is shown is fairly likely to be something you want or need.

The ads aren't all that intrusive. Most people can generally cope with them. Also, the cost of removing ads is quite significant relative to the price of the e-reader itself.

Ads. Doesn't boter me at all. I actually discover some pretty cool books thanks to that feature.

Same here. I discover many cool stuff. Also, they sort of improve the homepage design.

I don’t mind the ads. I’m not very influenced by advertising when unless I’m already in the market for something specifically. I think it’s silly that they have to put ads on their devices, but I’m not about to spend more money when I don’t have a lot of extra in the first place.

:techie-studyinggray: I know ads may pay the bills for somethings, but I don't have $30-$50 to shell out no matter what the service provides...

I admit that I am ad-weary. I give Kindles to children for gifts. For the life of me, why would we subject them to advertising? It seems that I cannot even avoid them when I purchase "ad-free" subscriptions to apps. Oh well, it is, what it is...

Honestly the adds only show up on the opening screen. If you put your kindle to sleep, when it comes back on a ad will be there. They are not very intrusive. But the ads on a kindle fire are a lot more annoying.

Scott wrote: 08 Nov 2011, 13:34 Almost all the Kindles come with two options, you can either pay about $30-$50 extra for an ad-free version or you can save that $30-$50 but have advertisements displayed on your Kindle screensaver and homepage. I have set up a poll for everyone to answer the question of whether they would prefer to get a discount at the price of having ads permanently installed in their device. Here is a breakdown of the current prices as of this post (subject to change or error of course):

The basic Kindle is $79 with ads and $109 without, a $30 difference ( 27.5% savings).
The Kindle Keyboard without 3G is $99 with ads and $139 without, a $40 difference (28.8% savings).
The Kindle Keyboard 3G is $139 with ads and $189, a $50 difference (26.5% savings).
The Kindle Touch without 3G and the is $99 with ads and $139 without, a $40 difference (28.8% savings).
The Kindle Touch 3G is $149 with ads and $189 without, a $40 difference (21.2% savings).
The new Kindle Fire does not have an ad option as far as I know.

What do you think of this offer overall? Do you prefer to have the option of getting a discount in return for allowing ads to be installed on your device, do you dislike the idea of commercialism going so far as to require per-installation of adware on physical devices, or do you not care either way? It is not that unusual of a concept. Over-the-air TV is often free but with ads, whereas you can pay for premium, ad-free channels such as HBO or buy an over-the-air TV show on DVD ad-free.

Is anyone familiar with the exact rules and methodology of these ads? I do not have a Kindle, but I assume the device can be fairly easily rooted and then have the ads removed presumably at the expense of giving up the warranty; is that true? If it is true, is it legal? If it isn't legal, how do you feel about being so legally limited with what you can do with something you bought in the privacy of your own home?
I personally have the kindle with the ads and they don't bother me a bit. They are mostly for books and Amazon product offerings. They do not interfere with the function of the kindle and honestly are barely noticeable as they only appear on the homepage.

My Kindle has ads, but I don't mind. I just ignore them while I choose a book to read.
