Borrowed Kindle, can I use it?

I don't know how to work this, a borrowed Kindle, can I download from Amazon to my account (which is on my desktop computer) even though the Kindle has someone else's name on it? Has anyone ever used someone else's device successfully?

I think that the borrowed kindle has to be tied to your account in order for you to buy things through it. If it's tied to another person's account, I think that purchases would show up on the other person's account.

Thanks, I was hoping it would be like a computer that allows a guest to sign on and use their accounts. But perhaps not.
