Her mother should be seeing a psychiatrist because there is no way a behavior like that is normal.

Yeah she obviously suffered from mental illness. With both her daughter and husband dying, she wasn't in the right mindset. Especially that the daughter who remained is the one she disliked.

I don't think she was. She was still grieving her daughter's death, and she confused Roxy's favorite things with the other daughter's. That much could be understandable after such a tragic loss. However, she treated Roxy poorly and threw her out of her home, and she wasn't didn't accept that Roxy's beliefs were different from hers.

Just like Roxy, her mother also went through a lot in the past. She lost the love of her life and her beloved daughter. But it does not mean she can treat Roxy poorly. She threw her daughter out of her house and called her satanic names, so I cannot say she was in a normal state of mind, as any normal person would have treated their only daughter with love and care.

There is definitely something going on in Roxy's mother's psyche. Yes, maybe religion has affected her to some extent, as well as the loss of loved ones.

I think the death of her other daughter whom she clearly loved most pushed her over the edge.. PTSD is probably what she was suffering from and the fact that she was so deep in her religious beliefs made her see all her daughter’s actions as wrong. She clearly didn’t act as a mother to Roxy.

I don't think she is suffering from mental illness. I think her daughter's death was extremely hard on her and pushed her over the edge. She didn't approve of Roxy's lifestyle, and because of everything she had been through and her deep religious beliefs, she reacted in an extreme and unhealthy way.

No, she wasn't in a normal state of mind. Losing the people you love has a psychological effect on people. That is people are allowed to mourn their loved ones, to give them closure. Even though, some people never recover psychologically from that effect. I think that was what happened to Roxy's mom. I also think that was why treated Roxy the way she did.

Although she tried to use religion to cover it up, it didn't help much.

I don't think it's a mental issue, but there's definitely some radicality in the morals she believed in.

I think she may be suffering from some mental illness. She showed so many signs of not being mentally unstable throughout the book. The death of her other daughter will surely affect her negatively.

I think she didn't have a condition. But her normal state was quite abnormal. It's normal to dislike people, even if they're your blood. However, the extent to which she could go to hurt Roxy was alarming.

Death can change a person. It is possible that the death of her daughter led her down a path that resulted in a mental illness.

I do believe that Roxy's mother suffered from some form of mental imbalance. From her fanatical devotion to religion to losing a child and husband, it is understandable. I also believe, however, that she favored Roxy's sister over her and never gave Roxy a fair chance or loved her equally. With the onset of her mental deterioration, this only cemented that inequality and she went from favoring Audrey over Roxy to completely ignoring Roxy's existence and replacing her with Audrey. In her moments of clarity, she never sought to right that wrong and sadly, I think Roxy made the right decision to walk away from her mother forever, after she sent her away.

Unfortunately, I think she was pretty average. Just because she was religious doesn't make her ill. She has issues, but we must remember when sex before marriage was taboo, and men with long hair were freaky. And Roxy was a rebel. But, of course, it was sad with a mother who didn't love her. Roxy's mother was selfish, not sick.
