I don't think that e readers should ever fully replace real books. It is not the same thing and I hope that never happens

Ironically, serious music lovers have always thought that analog equipment (both recording & playback) are superior to digital. I always assumed that the music recording technology was improving, also, but learned a while ago that the quality of an MP3 is good if you listen to one type of music: pop. But if you listen to complex jazz or classical, the quality deteriorates. CDs are way better than MP3s, but still lack the depth that vinyl has.
The way it was explained to me, vinyl has a groove carved into it that mirrors the original sound's waveform. It's analog and comes out of the sound equipment as analog. CDs, DVDs and MP3 captures bits of the analog waveform--so many bits per second--and records it as digital and then converts it back to analog for the sound equipment. Lots of depth and subtle shifts get lost in the process.

I feel the same way about digital books. Only the words get converted, the texture and heft of the book is gone. The ability to flip back and forth between pages or have it automatically open to your favorite section is part of the experience with a printed book. The font and cover and smell of warm paper on a sunny day--all part of the experience. Digital books are useful tools, printed books are joy.

No! Can't replace a good book. But access to e-readers is great!

I voted No.Never. Even though I appreciate the free books we get to review, there is still nothing like a good old-fashioned book.

I voted No. never. There are still (believe it or not) people that do not have access to some apps, electronics, or the internet to do the downloading. I personally would rather have read the book but understand the convenience of the ereaders.

There is a certain wonder when you hold a book in your hands that cannot be created any other way.

I suppose I'm the odd man out - I like having a book in digital form. My eyes are not great, and so I love being able to enlarge the text; it makes reading much easier on me, and keeps me doing it for longer. Plus, a digital book means that I can search for exactly what I'm wanting to read, rather than having to thumb through until I stumble upon the right section. Also, it doesn't take up any space in my (very minimalist!) home, which, for me, is worth more than gold.

I like having a hard copy book, too, but digital is just more practical for me.

Having a digital book could cause an ample amount of harm. My eyes honestly are not that good since God knows when.

No. There is that different feeling you get when you hold a book in your hands and flip the pages as you read. This feeling can neither be compared nor replaced. I also love the smell of books:wink:
E-books are fine too only that electronic reading hurts the eyes so much.

I think it’s definitely a possibility, but there’s something special about holding a book that I think will never completely disappear.

It could happen someday, but I don't think hard copies will ever become obsolete. Personally, I like having options. Sometimes I prefer reading e-books and sometimes I like to read a paperback or hard cover. They each have advantages and disadvantages. I love them all! :techie-studyingbrown: :techie-reference:

Gosh, it's so hard to say where we will be in the future as far as technology goes. It all moves so fast, just ten years ago our cell phones were not nearly as powerful as they are now. But I believe there will always be a need for paper books, no matter where we are at.

No way! I refuse to replace my books with either ereaders or audiobook. I get how they might be more convenient in a way but I am a big fan of paperback.
