The Belle Fields and its recently published sequel by Lora Adams. Set in Yorkshire in the UK The Belle Fields is a kind of Victorian romance covering the chaotic life of a beautiful local girl who lands a job in the kitchens of an Earl who lives in a big mansion. The ups and downs of this innocent when confronted by some of the Earl's relations is a revelation - plenty of intrigue, sadness, joy, even murder etc and the descriptive narrative (especially covering how both ends of the social scale celebrated Christmases, Maydays etc) is a real joy to read. The end is not what I expected at all and have been awaiting the sequel with relish! Couldn't put mine down!
The sequel Ashes of Roses carries on covering the life of Emily and answers all the questions I needed and continues in the same descriptive vein - glad some of the folks in the original got just what they deserved and again the end is so unexpected although quite satisfying. Would recommend both books for readers who enjoy this genre.
The third is a collection of poems and may well be quite unique? Say Kangaroo by Five Sisters has compiled poems from the 5 siblings covering their family life while growing up in a tight-knit family in the UK in the 50's and 60's. Mum totally overworked, dad who liked a drink working all hours to keep the family going. Very nostalgic - topics include Christmases, schooling, pets etc etc. Illustrations are also included from the sisters. Many poems are thought provoking, some quite 'deep', lots are funny - took me back to my growing up. If you might be interested give it a try - would love others' comments on any of them. Good reading.
