Health Tips, Myths, And Tricks is a persuasive non-fiction book told from the point-of-view of Dr. Morton E. Tavel (a retired medical doctor/internist specializing in cardiovascular disease). Broken down into three distinct sections (Tips, Myths, Tricks), Tavel guides the reader through some of the most highly debated topics in the medical field today. The Tips division of this book provides fresh advice of which anyone can benefit such as: effective methods to weight loss, and the results of eating breakfast on a regular basis. The Myths section explores alternative aspects related to health and improved well-being--the author touches on concepts of presumed beneficial organic food, pros and cons of stretching before exercise, and evaluating the necessity of a yearly check-up. This writer uses the Tricks portion of his work to educate the reader about possible medical scams and provides a no-nonsense approach to naturalistic healing/other alternatives to traditional medical treatment. Obviously, these points are not a complete overview of all the information contained within this medical guide. However, a point-by-point breakdown allows readers to pick and pull information which may be relevant to them on individual preferences.
Although Dr. Tavel is extremely well-educated, I liked the strategy he used to relate the written material to the average reader using common vocabulary that most could comprehend. There is an abundance of health-related information throughout the book and being able to grasp the terminology is overly important for comprehension. I also enjoyed the way this author was very blunt when exposing total nonsense, lies, and money scams; he adamantly portrays what he believes to be true, leaving no room for interpretation. Since I am interested in methods to improve my own well-being, I thoroughly appreciated the plethora of information presented in the Tips portion of the book. This section is filled with guidance/suggestions which can easily be applied to one’s lifestyle with ease. In other words, one can begin getting healthier immediately with minimal effort involved!
On the other hand, there were a couple of aspects regarding this doctor’s book which did not appeal to me. Although this physician communicates in laymen’s terms, the reader will find numerous quotable excerpts spiced throughout the text from other specialists. Tavel uses these commentaries in relation to the points he portrays. However, many of these primary highlights are written in very formal medical speech, which is difficult for the average person to interpret. Also, the abundance of inconsistencies in punctuation made the book hard to follow.
Individuals who may appreciate this literary work are those who seek concrete answers supported by medical evidence in relation to health conspiracies. Additionally, health-conscious (or even health-curious) persons who wish to enhance their current health status would probably find this physician’s advice useful. Those who practice self-help forms of healing who do not want to spend time and/or money at the doctor would likewise enjoy this easy-to-understand information. Conversely, conservative people (and/or other medical experts) who are not interested in others’ opinions, but rather rely strictly on what they know to be true and medically correct may not relate to Tavel’s perspective. Also, anybody that engages in alternative forms of treatment for health-related ailments may feel insulted by this author’s very course opinion regarding supplemental remedies. Proceed with caution if you have a liking for naturalistic healing, use probiotics, weight loss pills, etc.
Overall, I rate this book 2 out of 4 stars. Yes, I believe this doctor provides legitimate medical reasoning, but I did not agree with all his opinions. For example, I have found chiropractic treatment very beneficial in treating my back pain; Tavel is not a supporter. I also think that in relation to some of the points made, this doctor was beyond opinionated, to the point of being rude and condescending offering no leeway towards those who may find these techniques beneficial. The other star was docked due to the vast amount of spelling and grammatical errors that occurred throughout the book. These mistakes not only made reading very difficult, but also were so profound that they totally almost distract from the primary points of the text.
