Review by Life In Books -- How to Define Yourself
Chuck Clifton has come up with a technique that can be used by anyone to define oneself. The technique has three elements which are stimulus, space of time and response. He explains each of these elements separately. The understanding of these three elements and their application can help you to attain higher self-control, and also define the kind of person you are.
Chuck shows the application of the technique in different kinds of situations. E.g. the stimulus can be the use of an offensive term by someone for you. In such a situation you can take a few moments to react. This time could be considered as the space of time. Finally, there is a response. You can either get offended or just let it go. This threefold technique has been illustrated with a lot of other circumstances. Besides, there is also a concept called predefinition explained by Chuck. There are a few times when predefinition can also be used as a part of this technique.
I loved the simplicity of the method in which Chuck puts forward the technique of defining a person. It is quite easy to understand and can be used in day-to-day life. This method seems to be of great help in a lot of situations. Chuck gives the example of different situations that one experiences in their daily lives. If you use this technique in such situations, you could come out of them as a wiser and happier person. As a result, it gives you better control of your life and also helps to define you as a person.
There are a few situations mentioned in the book which don’t seem very easy to control. Chuck has mentioned about them in the beginning and tells you not to go very hard on yourself. Eventually, after some experiences, you would be able to put the technique into action even for difficult situations.
There are a few illustrations in the book taken from the internet, which I guess do not play a very important role in the book. However, the illustrations do not distract the flow of the book.
I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. This is a great self-help book for our day-to-day lives. There are no typos or grammatical errors. I would recommend this book to everyone. But, for children, this book would be more helpful under the guidance of an older person.
