The book Understanding Requirements: Beyond the Basics by David Gelperin is an in-depth look at requirements development (RD). RD approaches how businesses (specifically technology-related corporations) look at their product and provides an implementation process in the development of quality products. The specific question of the role of requirements in product development is the main subject of this book, and the book also scrutinizes the value of written specs in regards to product testing.
The author uses light humor to get his point across in regards to requirements development, and numerous visual aids are provided. The book is divided into eight different sections, from understanding the product, quality goals, and the risk of managing requirements. This book is meant for project managers in effective management techniques but could be useful for any student studying business or person looking to improve their managing skills.
I enjoyed this book. The writing flowed well, there were excellent visuals included as a supplement to the written material, and I feel like I learned a lot. While I am not a project manager in the field of technology, I translated these tools to work in my classroom, and am excited to see how my students respond. There was a disclaimer to the reader at the beginning of the book, stating that if the reader already had an effective management plan in place, this book would be unclear and confusing to them. I liked this disclaimer and thought it smart of the author to include this warning.
This business-oriented book was fascinating to me and was easy to understand as a person who does not work in the business world. There were confusing sections with technical speak, but I understood as such when I started reading the book, and the technical sections did not bother me. I enjoyed the section the most where the author talks about how an effective manager doesn't necessarily "works smarter, not harder," but "worries early and smarter." By imagining and providing a possible outcome for every situation, the manager is able to prepare for any situation and provide the most quality product.
I give Understanding Requirements: Beyond the Basics by David Gelperin 4 out of 4 stars, for its excellent writing flow, interesting subject matter, professionally edited material, and wonderful supplemental visuals to the text. I recommend this book for any project manager in the field of technology looking to streamline their business and workforce.
