Discovering Significance by Philip Giordano details the author’s personal journey from self-doubt to empowerment. Through self-reflection and journal entries, Giordano is able to look back and see how events and people in his life have brought him to where he is today. The book also encourages the readers to chronicle their lives through journal entries. It provides suggestions and journal questions to help others in this process. The purpose of all this is to bring a greater self-awareness to individuals.
One of Giordano’s greatest focus in this book is finding a balance between love and power. He believes that too much of either can lead to unhappiness. It is better to seek a bit of both instead. Many of the stories that Giordano shares throughout this book go back to this concept. Additionally, he coaches his readers in using love and power to become better leaders and communicators in their own lives.
I enjoyed a lot of the stories that the author shared. He touched on many themes about life and relationships, which helped make this book a well-rounded read. I really liked that this book details a single morning in which he told all of these stories to his daughter. It was nice for the author to make himself vulnerable to not only his readers, but his daughter as well. This allowed for a better self-reflection process. Some of the things that Giordano touched upon were not easy for him to talk about, but he decided to share them anyways with no objections. He did this so that both he and the readers would learn more about him. Everything that he went through, whether good or bad, has molded him into the person that he is now. Additionally, I liked reading the journal questions and inspirational quotes that he provided at the end of each chapter.
There was hardly anything I found wrong with this book. It was a quick and pleasant read. I did find a few grammatical mistakes. They were mostly punctuation errors. However, the book’s content made up for it. They didn’t distract me from the overall novel. Another thing is that, at times, the dialogue between Giordano and his daughter seemed a bit unrealistic. I’m sure these issues are fixable with another round of editing.
I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. It’s a great self-reflection book about an individual’s personal journey through life. The book has a nice tone to it and flows well for the most part. My only suggestions would be to rewrite some of the dialogue and have an editor look through it for grammatical errors. This isn’t the best book for those who don’t like nonfiction or personal stories. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys journal writing and is looking to find more meaning in their lives.
