Review of The Case of the Puzzled Pieces
There is a struggle within every human from their first day on Earth to find and establish their identity(who they are and what they stand for), which is shaped significantly by their environment and several other uncontrollable factors. And so, because it is easy to get lost while doing this and easy to look in your reflection and find others instead, the journey to self-discovery becomes a very important factor in living a fulfilling life. The reader follows the author’s journey of self-discovery in this book. Growing up with a strong and rooted understanding of her identity, the author lost that identity trying to fit in and belong to a group intimidated by her strong personality. This was the landmark on her journey to self-discovery.
The author takes us through an internal dialogue of personal growth/transformation without giving details about the events leading to it. The book is written in the form of prose poetry and structured into brief titles/chapters that capture the contents of each section. These titles were a bit confusing at first because of the author’s unique naming style. However, as I progressed, I understood and could draw meaning from the titles. This book would pass as an inspirational read because although the author does not share personal experiences and events in detail, her internal dialogue, infused with positivity, guides the readers to their transformations.
The author approached finding identity and purpose for living with undeterred positivity, which shows that it doesn't matter how far gone you think you are; it's never too late to make it right. I like that instead of dwelling in resentment and regret over what didn't go right, the author saw challenges more as a medium to learn and be better. Another interesting element about this book is how the author attributed her transformation to God. The book was divided into short, puzzled pieces, as the name implies. I also like how the author didn't just randomly arrange these pieces but gave them structure by connecting each piece to the next. There was, however, an irregular repetition of some lines of thought, but these weren't substantial enough to deter my interest and enjoyment of the book.
Anyone struggling with poor self-esteem and finding their identity in a world filled with so much chaos and a life of pretense would find
