From the transformational and inspirational stories in From Drift to Shift readers can learn to ‘shift’ from one stage in their existence to another. This guide presents ways of adapting from life-changing events and finding true purpose/meaning of life as well as contributing to society and making the world a better place for future generations.
This book is a collection of fascinating testimonies of extraordinary people who have overcome profuse life circumstances as being part of the foster care system, having cancer as a child, being in a car or skydiving accident. For me personally, the story of Andy’s life journey after parachuting accident that led to 26 reconstructive operations of his right arm, is very touching. Especially, Andy’s attempts at finding his way back to normal by helping those who have experienced injury, trauma or disability. As Andy says ‘We all matter in life. We are all important. The least of us all is the person that matters the most. We should all care’ (p. 88).
If you believe that living with depression is tough or if some things from your past still haunt you, then this read will help you realize that you are not alone. We’re all going through rough patches from time to time. We may need to tackle grave problems and make difficult choices. We are all the same. But we are all here for a reason, we just need to discover what it is. What gives us the purpose to live fulfilled and happier and give something of that goodness back to society. For that reason, we need to shift, instead of drift, our lives to find happiness.
I suggest you read this book a little bit at a time to digest the words and meanings of the changes described. At the end of each chapter, there are some ‘Takeaways’ that can help you to gather the main ideas, so go through them carefully. To give you an illustration, ‘The end result is to know yourself’ or ‘The core of life is joy. Seek joy’ (p.164).
In my opinion, the book is well-written, and it appears to be professionally edited. I did not find any mistakes. I rate this self-help book 4 out of 4 stars, because the stories may inspire the readers to compare their lives and make similar positive shifts. It has a potential to be appealing to the wider audience, especially those who seek answers to questions on purpose of life.
