Dan Ryan's workbook is a valuable addition to his memoir, Out of the Ashes . . . .One Man's Journey: The Spiritual Cholesterol Diet. I suggest reading his memoir first because reading about his personal experiences with addiction will serve as motivation for following the guidelines outlined in this book, which is called Clearing “Spiritual Cholesterol”: A Practical Companion Guide to Forgiveness, Freedom, and Hearing God's Inner Voice.

The workbook has eight chapters, and each chapter contains exercises, suggestions for reflection, and goal setting. There is a great deal of repetition throughout the book due to the structure of the assignments. The sixth chapter is my favorite. The title is “Self-Forgiveness in Addiction Recovery,” where Ryan discusses how self-condemning thoughts block your peace. One of the exercises is to write down three acts of mercy that you will allow yourself that week. Ryan's personal experience in overcoming addiction is shown by this inclusion, and it is one of the steps that is often overlooked by other rehabilitation systems.

The book refers frequently to Alcoholics Anonymous. I have heard of the AA 12-Step Program, but not the AA 12 Promises. There are posters of both of these included in the book, which I appreciated. Because there are many biblical references that come from AA, some potential readers might not be ready to accept the religious concepts.

I found many errors in the first few pages of the book, mainly in the acknowledgment and dedication pages. I deducted one star for the lack of editing. I also deducted a star for the repetitiveness of the commentary concerning Ryan's homeless state. My rating is three out of five stars.

I would recommend this book as a companion to Ryan's memoir. I think the workbook would lose much of its value if the memoir is not read first. Ryan's proven success in overcoming challenges is one of the motivational keys to winning the battle over addiction, and this workbook does not describe the obstacles he faced.
